Duckie

Oct 2026 · Frontend & Design

Winner, MLH Challenge · BigRedHack 2026

We built a Feynman Rubber Duck that you can teach out loud.

  • Built the frontend in Next.js and Tailwind CSS
  • Created Duckie's look, personality and tone, inspired by Rocky from Project Hail Mary and Grug
  • Wrote the rules spec for when Duckie speaks, how much help it gives, and every threshold the engine runs on
Why we built Duckie

Ever asked AI for something, read the answer, and thought “yup, makes sense, I get it now,” and then totally blanked on the exam? Well, you are not alone. Psychologists call this the illusion of explanatory depth: we rate our understanding highly until someone asks us to explain it step by step.

To help you achieve real deep learning, you need to explain to duckie and convince it that you understand the ins and outs.

And we are paying tribute to rubber duck debugging.

I built a Chrome extension that makes reading full-Japanese webpages easier.

  • Highlights Japanese vocabulary at your chosen JLPT level on any webpage
  • Shows the reading and English meaning on hover
  • Saves words and sentences to a memo panel for review and CSV export
